El último mapa global del carbono reveló un dato que no puede pasar desapercibido: la intervención humana ha liberado cerca del 24 % de las reservas naturales de carbono en suelos y vegetación, lo que equivale a 344.000 millones de toneladas de CO₂. Para dimensionarlo: esta pérdida es comparable a todas las emisiones fósiles acumuladas en los últimos 50 años. Se trata de una señal contundente de que la degradación de los ecosistemas no solo afecta la biodiversidad, sino que también acelera el cambio climático.

La noticia, difundida recientemente por Infobae a partir de la investigación publicada en Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, confirma algo que los especialistas vienen advirtiendo: la salud de los suelos es un factor clave en la lucha contra la crisis climática y en la sostenibilidad de la producción agroalimentaria. Cada tonelada de carbono que perdemos en la tierra significa menos fertilidad, menos resiliencia frente a eventos extremos y más gases de efecto invernadero en la atmósfera.
